Samsung launches the Exynos 5 series 7872 SoC with support for an iris scanner

Samsung Exynos 5 series 7872 SoC

Samsung has launched a new processor in the Exynos 5 series. As you can recall, this series of processors are meant for mid-range devices. The Exynos 5 Series 7872 SoC will power many devices and the first of the lot, the Meizu M6s, has been launched yesterday only.

Meizu has released numerous Exynos-powered devices in the past including the Meizu Pro 6 Plus and Meizu Pro 5.

The Exynos 5 series 7872 SoC is built on 14nm process and features a hexa-core CPU. According to Samsung, the single core performance has been improved by two folds as compared to its predecessor. The company has published a blog on its forum listing all the specs and features of this processor.

The Exynos 7872 processor is a hexa-core SoC with two Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. It is clocked at 1.6GHz. The processor consists of a Mali-G71MP1 GPU and an LTE Cat7 modem with a download speed of 300mbps and upload speed of 150mbps.

The USP of the Exynos 7872 Soc is that the company has added a support for an iris scanner. This clearly means that we can expect this feature on the mid-range devices soon. The SoC also supports 21.7MP front and rear cameras. However, Samsung has not included any special feature for supporting a dual camera setup.

Samsung also says, “For more enjoyable multimedia experiences, the Exynos 7872 features an upgraded ISP and MFC that supports full HD video encoding and decoding at 120fps with HEVC(H.265) and H.264 codecs by using a 21.7MP high-resolution camera. Last but not the least, the Exynos 7872 also supports out-focusing photography and a dual camera feature that is usually found in premium smartphones. By combining the information from RGB and monochrome camera, the Exynos 7872 can create an out-focus effect to make photographs more visually appealing.”

Samsung has launched the Galaxy On7 Prime with Samsung Mall.

The maximum resolution which is supported by this SoC is 1920 x 1200p. With connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11n dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0, CDMA, GSM, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, LTE-FDD, and LTE-TDD, this processor would make the mid-range devices more reliable.

Along with Meizu, OEMs like Lenovo, have also introduced phones with an Exynos processor.
