For a day now, I have been using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, the company’s more affordable folding phone to launch this year, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G. And right now, I am in a dilemma! Should I flip or should I fold? I am sure that’s the question many people have in their minds these days, considering the pre-orders are already live and making a choice between the two is a tough one.
Lucky for me, I have both the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G in my possession, and in this article, I’ll be sharing my initial thoughts about the latter.

Galaxy Z Flip3 5G: Flipping it!
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is an eye-catchy smartphone and literally, words don’t do justice as to how gorgeous this phone looks in person. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, I have received the Z Flip3 in the Phantom Black colour variant, and it looks sexy! The glossy outer from the OG Flip is gone, and what we now have is the new matte finish, similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G.
Even the frame is matte black, feels smooth to the touch, and this is where Samsung has used aerospace-grade alloy protection, dubbed Armor Aluminum, which the company claims is about 20% more durable than last year’s model. And, this smooth matte treatment all across does make the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G slippery, but to be honest, I don’t care because it just looks and feels so good.
The outer of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus, while on the inside, there’s an ultra-thin glass, which admittedly is on the softer side. However, this time around, there’s a high-quality screen protector that comes pre-applied, and it should definitely help to prevent the main screen from scuffs and scratches.
And as we are on the topic of the display, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G features a beautiful 6.7” Dynamic AMOLED 2X, Infinity Flex display, with a centre-aligned hole-punch camera and thin uniform bezels all around. And despite being such a large panel, the phone is fairly easy to operate with one hand as well, thanks to the tall 22:9 aspect ratio. And the cherry on top is the 120Hz Adaptive screen refresh rate which helps in delivering a smooth experience across the UI.
So, initial thoughts? Well, is that even a question! I mean, there’s no doubt this is a well-calibrated display, no second thoughts about that. Brightness levels, contrast levels, black levels or the colour reproduction, everything is top-notch. Of course, you do feel the crease in between while swiping or scrolling across, but you get used to it, not a deal-breaker at all!
Finally, on the outside, is a significantly larger 1.9” Super AMOLED cover screen versus the 1.1” cover screen on the OG Flip. And while many would argue that despite a larger panel, you still can’t text or check maybe your Instagram from the cover screen, first of all, no! You don’t do such stuff on an outer screen. For all the good stuff, there’s the main display, you flip your open and you’re good to go. I mean that’s what you are paying for! And for all else, i.e. to check the time, to have notifications at a glance, or to take a peek at your schedule, there’s your cover display.
Apart from this, the hinge also feels refined than ever. I know I said the same thing about the Galaxy Z Fold3 as well, but I don’t know, it’s all about the hinge in foldable smartphones, and Samsung has once again done a solid job. In all, the hinge feels sturdier than ever and it inspires confidence whenever you go on flipping around the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. I mean, I don’t even know how many times by now I have opened and closed this phone. Speaking of which, the thud it makes, when you shut it close, sweeeeet! And to top it all, this phone is also IPX8 rated, making it one of the first-ever water-resistant foldable smartphones, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold3.
As for the software experience, there’s OneUI 3.1.1 atop Android 11. There’s a 3,300mAh cell under the hood, which supports up to 15W of wired charging and up to 10W of wireless charging. In terms of optics, you get dual-rear cameras, comprising a 12MP main sensor, and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. Finally, at the front, i.e. on the cover screen, you’ll find the 10MP selfie snapper situated in the hole-punch.
Of course, I am reserving my final judgements for now when it comes to the battery life, the camera performance, or in fact the phone’s overall performance. I’ll be testing the Galaxy Flip3 5G full-swing in the coming days, so if you don’t want to miss that, definitely stay tuned to the Mr Phone YouTube channel.
Galaxy Z Flip3 5G: Closing thoughts…
What a day it has been to be able to spend time with the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. And while I still haven’t made up my mind when it comes to the Fold or the Flip, what I am sure about is that this technological marvel, i.e. the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, or let’s say, all the three Flip phones released till date; this line-up has also come a long way. I mean it was just last year when the Flip2 launched and it was introduced at a price of about 1.1Lacs, and mind you, that phone had its quirks. But just a year later, the Z Flip3 comes out, the “quirks” get ironed out, the phone looks and feels like a well-rounded product, and all this at a starting price of Rs. 84,999. And I know, this amount of money is not less, but it is still in line with the top of the line flagships like the Galaxy S21 series or even Apple’s latest crop of iPhones. And so, you can always choose those tried and tested phones, you won’t go wrong. However, if you decide to go with the Flip, then you’re in for a lot of new.
So the question is, do you live ordinary or do you go extra-ordinary? Because, honestly, ordinary is boring! Thanks a lot for reading the article. Stay tuned for my full review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Until then, stay safe and have a pleasant day!
