A month ago, the realme 8 series was official in the country; ever since the launch, there’s been anticipation of a 5G device from the company, especially in the budget segment. The realme 8 5G happens to be the response to it as the company has launched this in India at Rs 14,999.
realme 8 5G — Tech Specs
The 5G variant features a similar design set of principles as the non-5G variant: a gradient finish on the back, but no ‘Dare to leap’ branding, which makes it minimal; the camera module also appears to be borrowed from the non-5G variant. On the front, you can find a similar punch-hole display; measuring 6.5-inches. It comes with Full HD+ resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate and achieves a screen to body ratio of 90.5%.
There’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, for authentication, which seems to be convenient on smartphones these days. If you’re wondering how much it weighs: the device is a bit on the heavier side than the non 5G variant; it weighs around 185g and has a thickness of 8.5mm. The colour options of the device include — Supersonic Black and Blue.
There are key differentiators though: one of them is the most obvious one: 5G. realme 8 5G features the latest Dimensity 700 SoC, the 5G chipset from MediaTek announced early last week. The SoC is built on a 7nm process that utilizes two big ARM Cortex A76 cores with promised clock speeds of 2.2GHz. For graphics, it has ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The SoC makes the realme 8 5G support dual SIM 5G, NSA, and SA.
Dynamic RAM (DRE)
The other highlight feature on the 5G realme 8 is its support for Dynamic RAM expansion; meaning, virtual RAM is provided on the device. This concept was seen on the latest Vivo X60 phones released last month. realme 8 5G is offered in two storage variants that include 4GB and 8GB of RAM. The Dynamic RAM expansion here allows you to get up to 5GB RAM and up to 11GB of virtual RAM respectively. This should help the device run apps more effectively in the background as well as bringing improvements to photography.
For the onboard storage; realme 8 5G has 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. There’s up to 1TB expandable storage option as well. On the software front, it ships with Android 11 out of the box with realme UI 2.0 running on top of it.
There’s a triple rear camera setup that features a 48MP f/1.8 primary camera, which is a Samsung GM1 sensor. Followed by a B&W portrait lens and a 4cm macro lens. The front punch hole carries a 16MP f/2.1 selfie shooter, which supports AI beauty and portrait mode.
The realme 8 5G has a decent 5000mAh battery that charges through USB Type-C. It supports the company’s 18W fast charging technology (adapter is included in the packaging). Since 5G makes the device power-hungry, realme is offering a Smart 5G Power Saving mode that promises 30% lower power consumption.
