Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 got announced in a virtual Tech Summit held by the famous chipset maker. This replaces the company’s popular Snapdragon 855, 865 series and skips the 875 series as well. The company explains the number 8 has represented their premium tier chips from the start and says this new 888 series announcement is to kick start a new era in mobiles.

The new flagship processor brings in 5G enhancements and will feature in all major Android OEM’s top tier phones that are releasing in 2021. Apart from 5G, the Snapdragon 888 also attains several performance improvements in terms of AI with next-gen AI engines, and even in gaming with new GPU enhancements.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 — 5G Improvements
The SD 888 comes equipped with a new third-generation 5G modem termed the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF system. The system is built on a 5nm process and claims to achieve faster and low latency 5G. The system works on popular 5G spectrums that include mmWave and Sub-6GHz. While the new system itself was announced early this year, the 888 series chipset will be the first featuring it. The chipset now supports every 5G network available and brings global multi sim support as well.

The Snapdragon 888 features a new sixth-gen AI engine developed by Qualcomm. The AI engine is said to be re-engineered with a Qualcomm Hexagon processor alongside a new AI software and Qualcomm Sensing hub. All these work together to give users new ways to create media and bring several AI enhancements. These include Live motion tracking, recognising surrounding noise, for instance. Also, the AI engine achieves 26 TOPS (tera/trillion operations per second), the chipset maker implies.

There’s third-generation Snapdragon Elite gaming on the 888 SoC. It brings a 35% increase in GPU performance in comparison with the predecessor. The new Elite gaming also promises to deliver ultra-smooth gaming with HDR quality and also ought to bring desktop-level experience.

The Snapdragon 888 assures to bring several enhancements when it comes to its computational photography on smartphones. There’s a new gigapixel ISP, which enables the chipset powered phones to capture photos and videos at 2.7 gigapixels per second. This translates to shoot 120 photos at 12MP in a second. On the whole, this also marks a 35% improvement when compared to the predecessor SD 865.

Since its first day of summit Qualcomm hadn’t delved into technical details of this new chipset. The company has however suggested which major OEMs will come up with the new chipset. It includes all the major OEMs like Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, Motorola, SHARP, Vivo Black Shark, ASUS, Meizu, Nubia, LG and ZTE as well. Companies like realme and Xiaomi have already started teasing their upcoming flagships phones that ought to be featuring the new Snapdragon 888 chipset.
