Qualcomm is introducing new Snapdragon 870 5G chipset, the follow up to the predecessors — Snapdragon 865 and 865+ SoCs. It appears the chipset maker hasn’t forsaken the successor to the 865s after all. Though the powerful Snapdragon 888 has been announced as the next flagship SoC, Qualcomm had still held the tangible successor in the pipeline.
The Snapdragon 870 5G SoC doesn’t appear to be built on a new architecture like the 888. But, it still carries the 865’s architecture. Qualcomm says this new Snapdragon 870 SoC still brings significant improvements over the predecessors despite having a similar architecture.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G — Deets
The new follow on to the predecessors is bringing Qualcomm’s Kryo 585 CPU with an increase in clock speeds of up to 3.2GHz. In comparison with the older iterations, the 865 achieved 2.8GHz and the 865+ up to 3.1GHz. For 5G, the chipset supports both sub-6Hz and mmWave 5G spectrums — thanks to Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem. For graphics, the chipset includes Adreno 650 GPU coupled with a full suite of Snapdragon Elite gaming features.
The 7nm process built Snapdragon 870 5G chipset carries all the essential features from its predecessors like True 10bit HDR gaming support, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC to name a few. For the camera, the SoC utilises Qualcomm’s Spectra 480 ISP and supports up to 200MP single camera. The video capture also gets Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ alongside 4K capturing with simultaneous 64MP photo capture as well.
On the whole, the chipset perfectly sits in between previous Snapdragon 865/865+ and the flagship Snapdragon 888 processors. The phones featuring this chipset should likely get all the flagship features from ancestors. In fact, better in terms of claimed speeds at an affordable price range rather than the expensive range featuring the Snapdragon 888 processor.
