Snapdragon 855: 5G is here

The Snapdragon 855 was announced during the first day of the Qualcomm Tech Summit 2018. While the highlight of the day was 5G, the company did give us a short look at their upcoming processor. The Snapdragon 855 will be the world’s first consumer-ready 5G chipset. This is made possible thanks to the use of their 5G Snapdragon X50 modem. It is used to connect to 5G wireless data networks with “multi-gigabit” mobile data speeds of up to 50 or 100 times faster than current 4G networks.

Apart from the major focus on 5G, Qualcomm didn’t really focus much on the Snapdragon 855. That being said, they did give us some other insights about the SoC as well. The Snapdragon 855 will feature the company’s fourth generation, multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine. It is said to offer up to three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation mobile platform. What’s more is that Qualcomm also said the Snapdragon 855 would feature the world’s first Computer Vision (CV) ISP. It will enable help phones to recognize objects and faces, and power new video capture features.

Next, the company unveiled Snapdragon Elite Gaming, a set of features in the mobile platform to enhance mobile gaming experiences. Last but not least, the chipset will also come with support for the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. It is, essentially, an under-display fingerprint sensor solution that uses ultrasonic waves, unlike optical under-display fingerprint sensors which use light. This should make the sensor more secure and accurate than its alternative.
