Oppo F5 with 20MP Selfie camera and AI powered beauty mode launched in Philippines

Oppo F5 launched

If you are more into selfies than anything else, here is a good news for you. Oppo has just announced Oppo F5 in the Philippines for a price starting at PHP 15,990 (approx. Rs.20,000). Oppo F5 is the new member to its “Selfie Expert” lineup and successor to the Oppo F3/F3 Plus which came out in Q2 2017. While the Oppo F3 came up with dual front-facing cameras, F5 has a single camera on both front and back but claims to bring a lot of improvements in image quality.

Oppo has finally jumped into the 18:9 bandwagon with the Oppo F5. It sports a 6-inch Full HD+ (2160 x 1080) LCD display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Even though Oppo F5 does not feature an edge-to-edge display, bezels have been shrunk down quite a bit making the device easier to handle.

Oppo F5 has an all-metal unibody design with slightly curved edges. The oval-shaped fingerprint scanner (like what we have seen on latest Oppo R11-S renders) is placed on the back. But, the fingerprint scanner is not the only method to unlock the device. Oppo has come up with a face unlocking technology just like the one used in Samsung Galaxy S8, which they claim to work even in low light situations. This may not be the most secure way to unlock the phone as it is just a camera-based face recognition and can easily be fooled by a photograph. The handset measures 156.5x76x7.5mm and weigh 152 grams.

Oppo F5 has a 20MP f/2.0 front-facing camera and a 16MP f/1.8 rear camera along with an LED Flash. As always, Oppo F5 is also marketed as a selfie-centric smartphone and this time, Oppo has geared up the game by bringing Artificial intelligence into play, for getting better selfies of course. Oppo F5, with the help of AI, scans 200 facial reference points which help it to recognize the skin tone, skin color, age, gender and even nationality (really??) in order to process the image accordingly.

There’s more, the AI-based beautification mode can remove blemishes and dark spots from the subject’s face and can even whiten the teeth (what more do you need??).

They also employ AI to produce an artificial bokeh without the help of a secondary lens, just like what Google did with the new Pixel 2. While we are pretty sure that the application of AI will be far away from that of Google, I am really curious to see what Oppo brings to the table.

Coming to the specifications department, Oppo F5 packs in a MediaTek MT-6763T Octa-core SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. A 6GB RAM variant with 64GB internal memory is also available. Storage can be expanded via the dedicated microSD card slot which accepts cards up to 256GB. The handset is powered by a 3200mAh battery and it runs ColorOS 3.2 on top of Android 7.1 Nougat.

For connectivity, Oppo F5 has 4G VoLTE, 3G, 2G, Bluetooth 4.2, 2.4/5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n, GPS, a micro-USB port for charging and data syncing and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The dual SIM slot on the right side of the handset accepts two nano-SIMs and a microSD card. It comes in 3 color variants: Gold, Black (4GB+32GB) and Red (6GB+64GB).

Oppo F5 will be available for pre-order in the Philippines starting from October 27 and pricing starts at PHP 15,990 (approx. Rs.20,000). Oppo has confirmed that the Oppo F5 will be launched in India on November 2nd. We can expect the smartphone to be priced around Rs.20,000.

Should you buy the Oppo F5 if it launches at a price of Rs. 20,000?

If you are planning to get an Oppo F5 for the 18:9 display and selfie camera, I would suggest you take a look at the Honor 9i. Just because of the fact that Honor 9i packs in a much superior Kirin 659 SoC, 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. Plus it has that 6-inch 18:9 display and dual camera setups on the front as well as on the rear. By choosing the Honor 9i over the Oppo F5, you are not losing anything but gaining a lot.

Well, what do you think about the Oppo F5? Would you pick one up instead of the Huawei Honor 9i? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to Mr.Phone for more info.
