Nokia is back in the smartphone game, showing its prowess with recently released models, trying to cater for all the starters, mid-rangers and high-end tech consumers out there. The revival of the Nokia name on smartphones was made possible mainly by HMD Global, whom we thank profusely.
Tech consumers felt their absence during the past years, but now Nokia seems to have hit the road running, and is challenging the established big boys in the market.
Now, rumors are rife, that Nokia will be releasing a flagship. Yes, following the Nokia 8, here comes the Nokia 9, and from what you will read below, well, you will agree that we are in for a nice treat.
Okay, enough chit-chat, let`s delve directly into the succulent details, bon appetit, enjoy.
A reliable source, who is a representative for HMD Global [thus it`s the most reliable source one can find right now] hinted that the phone is on the way, and it will have a larger screen, “to meet the needs of absolutely all users”, but more on that screen later.
The only release date rumor we have is coming from MyDrivers, who are saying that…drum roll…Nokia 9 will be released on January 19th, with an announcement in China.
So, as you can see it`s less than one month away!
Multiple sources are pointing to a 5.5-inch QHD display.
QHD typically means 1440 x 2560 and it’s the standard flagship screen resolution, though some phones, such as the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, are now pushing above that.
5.5 inches is a fairly typical size too – not a small screen but not quite a phablet either.
The most interesting aspect though is the possible use of OLED.
As you may know, Samsung utilizes this screen tech for most of their smartphones.
It tends to deliver more vibrant, but potentially less natural colors than an LCD display, and could soon be the tech of choice among flagship makers, with Apple also rumored to be using it in upcoming handsets.
However, the Nokia 8 stuck with LCD, and is only slightly smaller at 5.3 inches, so for the Nokia 9 to stand out we’d think it might push the size up further.
Sources claim that an-all metal body will be in the offing, while other rumors go that it will be IP68 certified, meaning that it could resist up to 1.5 meters underwater for up to 30 minutes, apart from being also dust proof.
The most recent leaked image of the phone only shows the front, but it seems to have tiny bezels and a dual-lens front-facing camera. There is no fingerprint scanner, so this is likely on the back.
On the other hand, we can have a similar design like that of the Samsung S7 Edge, where metal would be replaced by the glass with curvy edges. The below image refers, where one can also notice the top and bottom bezels.
This image also shows the dual-lens camera and fingerprint scanner both on the rear.
Alas, most probably, the much-loved 3.5 mm headphone port will be omitted, as Nokia joins other renowned brands in this `in-thing`, with Apple leading the way.
As dimensions go, leaked renders by @OnLeaks for CompareRaja, state that it will apparently be 140.9 x 72.9 x 7.5 mm.
As aforementioned, it seems that we`re heading for a dual-lens rear camera.
I will add now what a tipster claimed, that it will have a 22MP dual-lens Carl Zeiss snapper on the back, while a 12MP will be situated on the front.
If true, both of these cameras will have more megapixels than present flagship phones can offer, though they still don’t match for the 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020.
However, even newer leaks, point to a pair of 12MP and 13MP on the back, while a 5MP dual-lens camera for the front.
As for what the second lens will be used for, most probably it will feature telephoto zoom (2x ?) and wide-angle shots, like the new version on the Nokia 5.
Otherwise, it could resemble the Nokia 8, where monochrome and RGB are utilized, which is also cool, as they are combined for better shots, especially in low light.
One leak from NokiaPowerUser suggests a big battery at 3,800mAh of juice so that the heavy users can have a piece of mind. Their daily driver will accompany them through ought the day no matter what.
This battery would be one of the biggest even for flagships. Consider as an example that the LG G6 has a `modest` 3,300mAh in comparison.
More good news in this department, as fast charging will refill your juice quick, and get you up and running in no time, courtesy of Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.
Nokia 9 OS & Power
Early sources claim that the Nokia 9 will have a Snapdragon 835 chipset and 6GB of RAM.
Wow, now that would make for a high-end spec, topping even the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and the US version of the Samsung Galaxy S8, both of which use that chip but have just 4GB of RAM.
One of the sources adds that the Nokia 9 will also have an Adreno 540 GPU and run Android Nougat 7.1.2, which at time of writing is the latest Android release, but may not be by the time the phone actually launches.
Two benchmarks for the phone, both of which also list a Snapdragon 835 chipset, but one of which lists 4GB of RAM, while the other claims it comes with 8GB.
However, if there is an 8GB model in the works, we wouldn’t expect to see it in the West.
We wouldn’t expect to see any kind of overlay, as HMD Global has stuck with stock Android on its current crop of handsets.
Other mentioned features
Also, according to NokiaPowerUser the Nokia 9 will have both an iris scanner and a fingerprint scanner, much like the Galaxy S8.
The same source claims that it will feature OZO audio enhancements, which is a Nokia tech creating a surround sound effect when you`re recording audio.
It lets smartphones with four microphones record 3D audio, whereas those with three microphones capture spatial 360 audio, and finally those with two microphones capture spatial audio…just sayin`.
However, the source doesn`t mention how many microphones the Nokia 9 has, so for now, we don`t know how heavily it will be able to take advantage of this OZO tech.
Nokia 9 price
Latest pricing rumor puts the 64GB model of the Nokia 9 at around $560, while you would have to fork out around $635 for the 128GB version.
Usually one would rest on the more recent pricing rumor, especially if it puts the phone at a lower price since rumored specs listed above might be a bit dated by the time it lands, or would they?
If these prices are out of your budget though, but you are still a Nokia fan, well we would suggest to check out the other end of the scale, as with a more reasonable price tag [but much fewer specs] there`s the new Nokia 3310 (2017), for the incurable romantics, with a tad of melancholy.
So, there you have it, all the recent news and rumors about the Nokia 9! Attracted?
