Nokia will bring back the feature to black-out the notch; Juho Sarvikas confirms

Nokia 6.1 Plus 5

Update: Juho Sarvikas, CPO (Chief Product Officer) of HMD Global has shared an interesting update regarding the “Notch Gate” situation on the company’s Nokia 6.1 Plus smartphone. Mr. Sarvikas has finally confirmed that the feature to hide the notch will be enabled soon on the mentioned phone. This could mean users won’t have to wait for the Android 9 Pie update to roll out. But rather a small update might be coming soon for fixing the said issue. Although, the ETA hasn’t been shared by the company official.

Earlier this week, HMD Global, the new owner of Nokia phones recently rolled out August security update to its latest Nokia 6.1 Plus smartphone. In this latest update, the company has removed the option to hide the notch in the system settings which was previously available on the phone. And this has seemed to upset 6.1 Plus smartphone.

Nokia 6.1 Plus: no camouflaging notch anymore

In case you didn’t know, the 6.1 Plus is Nokia’s first smartphone in India with a notch display. Its similar counterpart is available in China as Nokia X6. Initially, the Finnish brand didn’t reveal any reason as to why this feature was removed. But looking after a heated discussion on the company’s forum page, it was revealed by a forum moderator that company did this to meet Google’s requirements.

Unfortunately, that’s the complete reply from the moderator. It leaves us wondering; what are these requirements Google wants a manufacturer to meet that is affecting brand to remove this feature to camouflage the notch. This initially was reported as a bug on Twitter and Reddit, but queries raised on Nokia community confirmed that the Finnish maker removed it intentionally.

Now you might be wondering; will this feature to hide the notch come back or not! Well, in that case, you’d have to wait as so are we for the brand to revert on this situation. Odds are that when Google releases its Android 9.0 Pie update to Android One devices, the 6.1 Plus should get back this full bezel mode. Until then Nokia 6.1 Plus users might have to live with the notch if they hate it for some reason.
