Motorola Edge S 5G happens to be the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 870 SoC, which was introduced by Qualcomm, early this month. The 870 SoC comes as a successor to the flagship Snapdragon 865/865+ SoCs and sits in between the predecessors and the more premium flagship Snapdragon 888 SoC. Motorola’s Edge S is debuting with this latest Qualcomm and costs CNY 1,999, which translates to Rs 22,600 approximately, and is launched in the Chinese market.

Motorola Edge S 5G — Display and Design

The Edge S equips a 6.7-inches LCD display with 90Hz refresh rates. It comes with Full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 21:9. It has a dual punch hole cut to host the selfie camera and further comes with HDR10 support. The display encloses in a gradient finish surface on the back and the colours options here include — [Chinese translate] Emerald light (Blue) and Snow Mint (Silver finish).

The latest Motorola device equips the latest Qualcomm processor. The 7nm processor utilizes Kryo 585 CPU cores with clock speeds of up to 3.2GHz. It utilises Adreno 650 GPU, for graphics. The storage options of the device include 6GB or 8GB RAM followed by 128GB/256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Motorola is also offering expandable storage via microSD for up to 1TB. The phone further ships with Google’s latest Android 11 out of the box.

The Motorola Edge S 5G has new square rear modules unlike the previous iterations, which featured an array of cameras. This time the Edge S houses four cameras in the new module wherein the 64MP acts as the primary sensor, 16MP as a wide-angle camera, and there’s a 2MP depth sensor coupled with a ToF sensor. The front also has multiple cameras with two sensors — 16MP primary and 8MP wide-angle sensor stacked next to each other in the dual punch-hole cutout.

The Edge S packs in a massive 5000mAh battery underneath with 20W fast charging support. It charges through USB Type-C, and despite the phone coming with flagship status, it is not offering wireless charging, a thing to bear in mind.

The other highlights of the Edge S include Snapdragon X55 modem, which makes the device 5G capable, there’s Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 support. It further offers NFC and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack port.

Motorola Edge S 5G — Pricing

The Motorola Edge S 5G comes as the successor in the company’s Edge series lineup and it starts at CNY 1,999 (Rs 22,600 approx.) for the base 6GB+128GB variant. The 8GB+128GB retails at CNY 2,399 (Rs 27,000) and the larger 8GB+256GB costs CNY 2,799 (Rs 31,600 approx.). The device is available for purchase in the Chinese markets, the global and Indian availability of the device is still unclear at this point. So, stay tuned.
