OPPO has recently launched the new Reno6 Series, which comprises two new smartphones – Reno6 and Reno6 Pro 5G. These smartphones promise to feature the latest and greatest features from the house of OPPO. In today’s day and age, consumers have started to incline their attention towards smartphones that possess a good design. Sure we do have other essential factors like Display, Performance, Camera and Battery. But it seems that these days, both smartphone buyers and manufacturers are aiming to focus on which phone ‘looks’ the best. Keeping this same aspect in mind, we got a chance to speak with Mr Tasleem Arif, Vice President, R&D Head, OPPO India, about how the new Reno6 Series ensures top-notch product quality.
Q. What has been the response from consumers after OPPO Reno6 series launch?
Our Reno series is one of the most loved series among our users, being the epitome of consumer-centric innovation, it has been very well received by customers over the years. Our recently launched Reno6 Pro recorded 178% jump in growth on the first day of the sale, compared to the response that company recorded for its predecessor. This for us is a massive success and its popularity can be witnessed especially amongst young creators who like to explore the world through the lens of the camera. The Reno 6 Series is dedicated to consumers looking for an elegantly designed smartphone as it boasts a powerful mix of innovative features and offers premium camera technology.

Q. With the Reno6 Series, OPPO seems to have adopted a new design language. What was the idea behind this new design philosophy?
OPPO has always focused on elevating its technology and design capabilities and continues to truly meet the core needs of consumers with ultimate products and services. Our OPPO Reno6 Series not only inherits the advantages of our predecessors, but also integrates lots of advanced features, including OPPO’s cutting-edge imaging technology and design processes which offer users a new generation of experiences. Many levels of design have always been the guiding force behind our approach to the popular Reno series of smartphones, combining innovative technology with trendy designs to refresh the experience for consumers with each generation.
OPPO’s exclusive Reno Glow effect has been a central part of the overall design of the Reno series and has evolved together with the series through each iteration. Through a manufacturing process that takes more than 14-hours, the glass back cover of the phone is created to achieve two seemingly paradoxical properties of the OPPO exclusive Reno Glow effect – matte texture and shiny appearance. The complete manufacturing process involves around 50 complex steps, including glass cutting, 3D forming, ion exchange, etching, and more.
Q. We believe that along with offerings like a good camera, reliable battery and good quality display, design plays a key role in terms of customer choices for any device. How has OPPO worked towards this bit?
Smartphones are more than just a projection of our personalities; it’s an extension of what we represent and what we want to convey. Hence, the design of the smartphone plays a huge role in zeroing down on the one to buy. We have seen a lot of ongoing experiments been done in terms of look and feel, with all kinds of materials and finishes to ensure the design of the smartphone catches the eye. Over the years, we have designed and developed some innovative smartphones that seamlessly combine humanity and technology.
Q. Could you tell us about your process of ensuring a high-quality reliable design for OPPO smartphones? Especially when it comes to your latest Reno6 Series
OPPO has always taken product quality as a cornerstone of its sustainable, long-term development. From the very beginning of the product development phases up to the mass production process, the QE Reliability Lab set up in our Greater Noida factory is tasked with testing products against the strictest quality standards. This means that OPPO products can only reach consumers if they have successfully passed this rigorous journey of 150 tests, which includes environmental tests, mechanical stress tests, durability tests, performance tests, and many more.
Dropping our smartphone is perhaps the most routine accident we encounter on a daily basis. To make sure Reno6 can survive most drops and falls, the OPPO QE Reliability Lab has tested the phone in a variety of simulated drop scenarios. The common Drop Test simulates a typical free-fall scenario from various heights, which in the case of Reno6 was set at a height of 1 meter, 25% higher than the industry standard of 0.8 meters. This simulation was completed 12 to 24 times, with the phone being dropped on all of its 6 surfaces, 8 corners and 12 edges. To simulate more extreme scenarios, the phone was dropped in the same way but from a height of 1.5 meters.
In our everyday life however, it is much more likely that the phone is casually thrown onto the surfaces of everyday objects, such as a table or bed, in which the falling distance is much lower than that simulated in the accidents mentioned above. To test for these more common scenarios, Reno6 was dropped 28,000 times from a height of 10 centimeters – which is considerably more than the 5,000-10,000 times typically adopted in the industry.
In addition to these more common scenarios, Reno6 was also put through what is known as the Tumble Test to simulate the phone slipping and undergoing a strong collision. In the Tumble Test, the phone is placed inside a 1-meter-long case that rotates at a speed of 3.5 revolutions per minute for 15 revolutions, to simulate the phone being dropped from a height of 1 meter 150 times. This more rigorous test mimics the conditions in which the phone falls and collides heavily with a surface, ensuring the final device is resilient against most everyday drops.
Not only that, for all our smartphones to withstand day-to-day wear and tear, apart from many technical and mechanical tests, we do tests like sweat and cosmetic tests. Asides from harsh conditions resulting from the external environments, human sweat, and cosmetics left on the phone surface by users could also cause damage to the phone.
To test against these potential problems, Reno6 was put through a Sweat Test and a Cosmetics Test.
In the Sweat Test, the phone is tested by wrapping it in a cloth soaked in artificial sweat before placing it in a high temperature and humid environment (50°C and 95% humidity) for 48 hours. After that, the phone was set aside for 24 hours before being examined for normal functionality and signs of corrosion on the device’s inner and outer structure. On the Cosmetics Test, the testers applied a selection of cosmetics to the surface of the phone before placing it in a hot and humid environment (50°C and 95% humidity) for 24 hours. Therefore with every new innovation brought to our smartphone, the purpose ultimately has been to elevate the user experience with each generation
Q. How does OPPO focus on maintaining quality for all its products? And overall focus of the brand to showcase its quality?
To deliver an industry-leading reliability experience, all our smartphones, including our recently launched Reno6 Series, are subjected to one of the most rigorous testing processes in the industry. Ranging from Drop Tests, Waterproofing Tests, Environment Adaptability Testing, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Tests, Temperature Tests, Press Tests to Durability Tests. All these tests are designed to evaluate how the devices will perform during normal day-to-day use.
OPPO has tested both the devices of Reno6 Series against stricter standards than most companies in the industry. While the common industry standard for water resistance is at IPX2, OPPO’s Rain Test adopts the IPX4 standard, simulating a “heavy” rainfall of 10±0.5 L/min. During the test, the phone is sprayed with water onto its four surfaces at a 75° angle. It is also tested in the same way while the phone is playing video or making a voice call. To further test the water resistance, Reno6 was also tested underwater at a depth of 20 centimeters for 30 seconds. After each test, Reno6 was wiped dry and set aside for three days before being disassembled to examine if the main PCB interface or the display showed signs of corrosion.
To test the phone’s USB and headphone inputs, USB cables and headphone jacks were inserted 10,000 times each at varying angles. The USB input was also tested by swinging the device from an attached USB cable 5,000 to 10,000 times using a 3kg force.
With OPPO’s Environmental Work Test, this involves storing the phone at a low temperature, from as low as -40°C, to warm conditions at 75°C for 7 days (168 hours)– more than double the industry standard of 3 days (72 hours), The phone is also tested at intense humidity and temperature (95% humidity at 65°C) for 14 days (336 hours), which is also more than double the industry standard of 3 days (72 hours).
Further, OPPO OTA Lab conducts rigorous tests on the radiation efficiency of the phone’s antennas and also on the various network bands, including 5G, to ensure its seamless, trouble-free operability anywhere in the country.
