Huawei Mate X2 is the next generation foldable smartphone, which is set to launch later this month. The company has released a teaser image suggesting so on the Chinese microblogging website, Weibo. The new generation of the folding flagship will soon debut, the teaser suggests. This is likely the direct successor to the Huawei Mate Xs, the first commercially available foldable device by the company. This also makes the third iteration to the foldable smartphones by Huawei, with first being the original Mate X.
Huawei Mate X2 — Does the screen wrap outwards or inwards?
The upcoming Mate X2 is a folding phone for sure, but does the screen wraps inward or outward is the question here. The teaser suggests both, at least at first glance. The previous iterations of foldable Mate X devices showcased screens folding outwards like a wrap. This made it significantly different and unique when compared to Samsung Galaxy Fold devices (both first and second generations). The Mate X and the Mate XS also came with screens wrapped outwards with a mechanical hinge, making the giant screen exposed. This had led several concerns amongst consumers as one of the expensive foldable screens could be vulnerable no matter what kinds of protection film it comes with,
Now, back to the teaser image, which is very sceptical (at least for me, when I first saw the teaser image). Huawei has cleverly cropped the teaser image not revealing much of the device form factor or where the hinge is. The image shows a folding screen, which has a got a significantly slimmer hinge than the previous models. However, what’s interesting here is that it has got to fold or wrap in some way, and the image hints, it could have both ways.
First, we can consider the possibility that the screen will be wrapping outwards like the predecessors. And, the mechanical hinge is significantly slimmer. Second, we can expect the company to try out something different this time, making the screen folding inwards, which not only adds the new element to the device but also protects the screen when folded and slipped into your pocket. Nonetheless, this analogy is just based on the teaser image, and it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Huawei Mate X2 — Expected Specs
Apart from the speculative screen and the launch date, Huawei doesn’t reveal much about the Mate X2 in this teaser. Expected specifications could include the flagship Kirin 9000 processor, quadruple cameras, and we should also consider the possibility of the device not shipping with Google Apps, due to ongoing tensions with the US. So, stay tuned and come back for more details regarding the device on the launch date slated on February 22nd.
