Google’s longtime mission to provide AR (Augmented Reality) to the masses has finally hit a point where it is available without the need for all the extra hardware that previous Project Tango devices required to make this possible.
AR Stickers is built upon Google’s all-new ARCore and is available for Google Pixel devices running the latest Android 8.1 Oreo software.
All the user has to do is update AR stickers and ARCore in the Play Store to enable them in the camera app. After that, they simply move into the AR Stickers mode and capture videos or still shots of the characters which are grounded on horizontal surfaces mapped out by the ARCore.
At first, you must move your phone in a circular motion to scan and map the area and then can move any desired sticker onto the screen and resize it to your desired size. It is possible to move around the object and view it from other angles as well as the option to add more than one sticker to the scene at one time. In practice, the characters are kept really close to the ground and even movements around the characters do not destroy the effect.
For now, there are two special packs, the Stranger Things pack, and Star Wars pack. In addition to these, there are Google’s own custom stickers like a donut, broccoli and coffee mug. There is the promise of more packs in the near future as they look to expand the service!
Here is a video of how we had fun with these cute AR stickers! Watch and learn.
