Many of us might not remember Honor’s Magic. If you’re confused, I’m referring to a high-end Honor device launched in 2016 with tech that was ahead of its time. AI is all the buzz today but it wasn’t so in 2016 when Honor conjured up some magic and showcased its AI chops to the Chinese audience. That’s not all, it had graphene-based batteries with thirty minute top ups and a curved display that stood apart from the Samsung’s Galaxy S series.

However, the magic stayed in China and as a result wasn’t noticed across the globe. At IFA 2018 that kicked off yesterday, Honor pulled up a surprise by teasing the Honor Magic 2 and it left me spellbound. Honor’s Magic 2 aims to be among the elite smartphone category that flaunts the latest bezel-less tech like the OPPO Find X and Vivo Nex.

However, the prototype showcased at the event didn’t actually work with the slide-out mechanism. Let me point out here that we’re not aware if Honor’s implementation varies from OPPO’s to some extent. There is a possibility that this would not be an electric mechanised solution and would require manual effort. Honor has promised that it will endow the Magic 2 with a HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset, 40W Magic charge, and of course slide out cameras.
That’s pretty much what we were shown at the IFA event. If you’re wondering when this smartphone will get released, then the expectations are for the end of 2018. This is the first instance of the Honor Magic 2 and a lot about the smartphone remains unknown. If OPPO took the crown of innovation this year by being first with the new slide-out camera, it seems other Chinese competitors are only held back by time. Honor and Xiaomi will probably join them by the end of this year.
