Google Pixel 6 Pro

The Pixel 6 Pro is now official as part of the Google Pixel 6 series. It comes with its sibling Pixel 6 that retails at $599, while the higher-end model Google Pixel 6 Pro costs $899. Both share search engine giant’s new Tensor chip that promises to compete against Qualcomm’s latest processors. Google announced both the models through its ‘Pixel Fall Launch’ event, which was online-exclusive. The Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 will be available across select regions including Australia, the US, and the UK, to name a few. The Indian availability is still unclear, and expecting it to launch in the country is highly unlikely, given the history of recent Pixel devices.

Display and Design

The Pixel 6 Pro comes with a large 6.7-inches display with QHD+ resolution. It is an LTPO OLED display that comes with a 120Hz refresh rate, which Google calls Smooth Display. With 512ppi, the display has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and it equips Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection on top. Further, the OLED display comes with HDR support, and other perks of it include — an Always-On display coupled with the Now Playing feature.

The punch hole display comes enclosed in a premium finish build on the rear that has a gigantic bump beholding three rear cameras and LED flash. The device features three color options: Cloudy White, Sorta Sunny, and Stormy Black. Irrespective of the color you choose, the camera bump comes in black that looks like a module attached to an otherwise slab-looking design. Further, the Google Pixel 6 Pro also comes with IP68 protection which should save the device from water and dust.

The Pixel 6 Pro underneath has Google’s in-house developed Tensor chip. The chipset incorporates Google intelligence including advancements in Machine Learning (ML). This translates to unlocking more photography, security, and speech capabilities backed by the Google Research team.

“Using Google’s most advanced deep learning neural network algorithms, Tensor puts state-of-the-art speech recognition and language translation in your pocket. Designed to handle intensive computing needs of bigger and better models right from your Pixel, translation quality is improved by 18% on average to help you better understand and communicate in languages other than your own.6 And because these algorithms run on-device rather than through a network and server, they work fast – no internet connection required.”

There is a custom image signal processor (ISP) embedded with Tensor that brings ML capabilities for the device’s camera capabilities.

“We built Google’s Live HDR+ tone-mapping technology, low light video, and custom auto-focus engine directly into Tensor’s ISP so you can capture the moment just as you experienced it – in clear, vivid detail.

Tensor also helps make signature Pixel features like Night Sight, Live HDR+, and video stabilization even better – and brings them to the most popular social apps for the very first time.”

For security, the SoC also incorporates Google’s next-gen Titan M2 co-processor along with a new layer of the company’s specially designed hardware security platform. Both tend to work together to protect on device’s personal and sensitive information. The storage options of the Google Pixel 6 Pro include 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The device ships with Android 12 out of the box, which brings a slew of design features and customizations across the UI.

Cameras

The black slab on the rear houses triple rear cameras: a 50MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 48MP telephoto lens. The 50MP sensor here promises to capture 150% more light compared to the predecessor Pixel 5. The telephoto lens on the other hand supports 4x optical zoom. The ultra-wide-angle on the other hand has a 114-degree field of view. The cameras here come with a set of new features comprising Magic Eraser, Real Tone, Motion mode, and Night Sight, to name a few. The Magic Eraser lets users eradicate photobombs or unnecessary obstacles in the background. Real Tone promises to keep skin tones of all colored skins more natural instead of over processing or overshadowing.

The punch hole selfie camera has an 11.1MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and supports ultra-wide shots with a 94-degree field of view. For video, both the front and rear cameras support up to 4K video recording at 30 FPS.

Battery

The Pixel 6 Pro comes with a larger 5000mAh battery that is promising 24-hour battery life. It supports fast charging which translates to up to 50% charge in about thirty minutes. Google is selling its 30W USB-C charger with USB Power Delivery separately. The battery supports Qi wireless charging, fast wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging as well.
