Know everything about Samsung’s twin ISOCELL image sensors


So Samsung’s been in limelight as its legacy of delivering high-quality smartphones has been quite un-parallelled. But the company also plays a key role in delivering high tech components and accessories to other OEM’s. Products, ranging from Chips, boards and display units are in huge demand owing to the quality control and their ability to process huge volumes. This week, Samsung has launched two new ISOCELL image sensors that are targeted to smartphones with slimmer designs. Read on to know more about it. 

One of the image sensors is a 1.29 micron 12 – megapixel ISOCELL Fast 2L9 with Dual Pixel technology and the other is an ultra-small 24-megapixel ISOCELL Slim 2X7 with Tetra cell technology. Both are targeted for slimmer smartphones.

Samsung is trying to achieve, what the Google Pixel 2 has achieved by having just a single lens producing a bokeh-like effect. Samsung says that with the Dual Pixel technology, the camera would essentially be able to capture the depth of field effect by a single sensor. Also with 12 million focus detecting pixels, the sensor would be able to track moving objects and also focus on small still objects more efficiently, in low light environments. This would, in turn, improve the smartphone form factor by eliminating the camera bump on the back.

The ISOCELL Slim 2X7 sensor is the first sensor to have a pixel size below 1.0 micron. It claims to provide higher color fidelity with less noise, thanks to the ISOCELL’s deeper “Deep trench isolation” technology which reduces color crosstalk. 

Tetracell technology is said to brighten low light images and use a re-mosiac algorithm to produce full resolution images with negligible noise. This empowers the front-facing camera more than the current standards. It also holds the capacity to place a 24 MP sensor in a much thinner camera housing. 

Samsung has been a pioneer in the smartphone camera. With the introduction of innovative technology as such, the future of Samsung electronics does look bright and it might get even tougher to beat their camera’s performance.
