Apple might not be the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, but it is still one of the biggest names out there. Apart from the devices they offer, the price tags are also something that has made them famous. But the bigger issue here in India is that due to import taxes, the actual cost of an iPhone in India is much higher as compared to overseas. Well, it seems like it could all be solved now. Yes, that’s right. Apple iPhones could get a whole lot cheaper in India now. I mean, you’d still have to shell out a kidney, but you’d have some leftover money now. Wanna know why? Read on.
New deal signed for Apple iPhones manufacturing in India
The IT ministry has approved contract manufacturer Wistron’s Rs 5,000-crore plan to make high-end Apple devices. The move is to further promote the Make in India plan. “We have just approved Wistron’s Rs 5,091-crore application and it is with the Cabinet now… Wistron will make the latest iPhone models”, said IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in an interview. He also pointed out that Foxconn had previously submitted an application for a Rs 2,500-crore project on December 31.
What does this mean?
Wistron isn’t new to the smartphone manufacturing business in India. The company already makes cheaper Apple phones in India. Now, it will be able to make higher end devices like the iPhone XS and the XR. As such, you can expect the iPhone prices to drop a lot. While we reckon if they’ll match the direct conversion rates from other countries, they will definitely become a lot more affordable with the new deal. What’s more is that you can even expect the next series of Apple smartphones to come in at a good price, considering the fact that Apple won’t be increasing the price from the previous gen.
